Join us this summer for programs to help your rising first through eighth grader return to the joy of learning! Our summer academic programs taught by Independence School faculty will focus on language arts and math while exploring the great outdoors. 

1st & 2nd Grade 
(maximum 15 students)

A short two-week academic camp exploring how to save the Earth’s environment through writing and applying math in many fun and exciting ways!

4th, 5th, & 6th Grade
(maximum 15 students)
When: Session 1: July 12 - 16 (grades 4-5), Session 2: July 26 - 30 (grades 5-6)

Rediscover your child’s love of learning!  This camp will be held mostly outdoors and will use elements in nature to inspire your child’s learning.  Content from English, math, science, and social studies will be taught each day in conjunction with that day’s theme, which may include trees, insects, birds, and pond and stream life.

Got WIFI? Make the most of your morning at the location of your choosing. It's like two camps in one!

Writing Workshop: Communication in written form is a key to success, and the journey should be an adventure! Using best practices and a bit of imagination, students will experiment with multiple forms of written communication using engaging activities designed for middle school students. 
Math Workshop: The Math Workshop will include differentiated activities and games to build on each student's math fluency in middle school. With access to a device and simple items around the home, students will explore topics to build a solid foundation and develop lifelong learning habits through customized lessons and feedback.

Young Critics

Have you ever wished you could tell everyone exactly what you think of the latest fad? Have you ever left a movie and found yourself unable to stop talking about it? At Young Critics Camp, your opinion matters! Campers will experience the entire journalistic process as they report on movies, restaurants, and a few other events that lend themselves to spreading the word. Campers will be guided through both written and onscreen reviews. Laptops or other devices used for word processing are encouraged!

GRAMMAR CLINIC

When: August 9‑12
Grade Level: Rising Grades 5‑8
Time: 9:00‑11:00 a.m.

We thoroughly explore the eight parts of speech, the foundation of all grammar study. Students become more familiar with the functions of words and how they work together within a sentence.
Please note that this camp will be taught both virtually and on campus.

INDY EXPLORATORIUM
 
PAINTING PARTY

Let’s paint! Watercolor, tempera, acrylic - we will explore it all. Join us for a fun-filled week exploring various techniques in water-based painting and printmaking. Each student will create their own paintings on canvas as well as several other paint-based projects. All ability levels are welcome. 

CLAY CREATIONS

(maximum 13 participants)

Time: 1:00‑4:00 p.m.

Join us as we explore clay hand-building techniques. We will pinch, roll, squeeze, squish, and carve to create imaginative and functional pieces. Participants will learn proper techniques to create with clay but have the freedom to build pieces of their choosing.

Chess Camp     

When: July 26 – July 30 
Grade Level/Time:  Rising K-3: 9am-12pm
                        4-8: 1pm- 4pm
Cost: $230
Instructor: Mr. Gregory Rogers, Founder and Coach of Chess Masters of Delaware

Chess Masters of Delaware has been teaching chess in schools since 2008. Founded at Pope John Paul II School by Coach Gregory Rogers, it has since expanded to several schools throughout New Castle County and Pennsylvania. As parents have begun to recognize the benefits of teaching chess to children and adolescents, Chess Masters of Delaware has grown in popularity. Coach Greg understands how chess can assist young people in making good choices not just in chess, but in life as well. He teaches the game with patience, dedication, and commitment.

STEM Lab Extravaganza

Calling all science fanatics! Get ready to concoct cool chemistry creations, formulate new physics ideas, engineer solutions to problems, and investigate how your own body works.

In the morning sessions, you’ll uncover the mysterious world of microbes, make “gassy” putty, build a working lung model, compete in a tower building challenge, and best of all, learn some really cool science magic tricks to play on your siblings or wow your relatives at the family reunion.

Stay for the afternoon sessions and you’ll mix up gooey, snotty slime, learn the ins and outs of the digestive system, construct a ping pong launcher, make an oscilloscope to create laser art, build your own bristle-bot racer and learn even more science magic!

Science Explorers has compiled our favorite camp experiments into this week-long science adventure!

In the morning sessions, you’ll make a groovy lava lamp test tube, mix up chemical reactions, erupt a volcano, make chalkboard and fluffy slime, build a solar oven to make treats, launch pompoms with your own catapult, create your own motorized invention, make a foaming “matter monster,” and go on a fossil dig.

Then, stay for the afternoon as we mix up “sunny slime” that reacts to UV light, get loud as we make clucking cups and musical chimes, build spin art machines, blast off film canister rockets, make sun prints, create acid and base art, experiment with the unique properties of water, and make fizzy bath poppers and fizzing CO2 reactions.
 

STEM Math + Coding + AI

Delaware STEAM Academy is back this summer to offer an online coding camp in which students will engage in project-based learning to create their own artificial intelligence model.

The Independence Summer Baseball Camp encompasses many aspects of the game, from skills, rules, equipment, field maintenance, and game theory. During our week together, there will be s mall group instruction along with whole group games and activities. The camp will be facilitated by seasoned Coach Chris Rispoli. After playing collegiate baseball as well as semi-pro, Coach Rispoli has over 17 years of coaching experience, from primary to junior high at both little league and the DIAA levels. The day will be packed with quality instruction and good old fashion fun! All participants will gain baseball knowledge and learn the fundamentals of the game, from basic to experienced, depending on skill level.
